My work inhabits the space between memory and perception, where time becomes uncertain and the familiar begins to shift.
Working across photography and moving image, I use analogue and digital processes, pinhole and toy cameras, digitised film and video. I am drawn to what appears briefly and quietly: a trace of human presence, an unexpected encounter, a landscape suspended in time, light revealing what was previously unseen.
Rather than describing the world, I am interested in what an image can leave unresolved. The visible becomes a threshold to something less tangible, a memory, an absence, a sensation, perhaps something imagined. My work is an invitation to linger between presence and absence, light and darkness, a space where the familiar can become strange, and where an image can awaken something remembered, imagined or forgotten.

Aliette Bretel (Lima, Peru, 1981) is a Peruvian photographer and visual artist based in the United Kingdom.
A graduate of El Centro de la Imagen in Lima, she continued her studies in documentary photography and photojournalism in Buenos Aires.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in London, Venice, Berlin, Chicago, Zürich, Lima, Buenos Aires and Ankara.Working between fine-art photography, documentary practice and moving image,
