Chiaroscuro explores the encounter between light and shadow as a visual and psychological space.
Inspired by Carl Jung's concept of the shadow, the work considers the hidden, repressed and unrecognised aspects of the self, and the tension that emerges when they begin to enter consciousness.
A solitary figure sits within darkness as a moving source of light gradually reveals and conceals the body. Light does not simply illuminate: it fragments, exposes and transforms. Shadow becomes an active presence rather than an absence.
Through this continual movement between visibility and obscurity, Chiaroscuro reflects on the relationship between the conscious and unconscious, and on the possibility of recognising what we ordinarily keep outside our awareness.
The work does not seek to resolve the opposition between light and darkness, but to allow both to coexist.
